But it completed the arc of the show.

The arc of the show WASN'T whether Sam will get home...

Sam's been home in one fashion or another enough times where he realizes that his saving lives is more important than his own happiness.

The arc is Al and Sam, the two best goddamn friends in the world, how Al's given up any kind of a normal life to try and get Sam back, would do anything for him... and how Sam always felt that maybe he never lived up to that in return. Because of the times where he chose doing the right thing in the eyes of God/time/fate/whatever instead of changing Al's life for the better.

And when given the choice TO go back home...

He used it to give Al the love of his life back instead.

That's fucking Mesopotamian epic awesome. That's fulfilling Gilgamesh.

That's the end to a Story with a capital S.

You were watching Leap because you wanted to see him get home?

I always saw that as the MacGuffin.

Mike
