Hate Letters of the Week

A steady stream of 'hate mail' has been reaching our mailboxes since an unauthorized early draft of the 'Dogma' script was placed on the Web many months ago. This was followed by a booklet distributed by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights which urged people to write to then distributor Miramax/Disney with their complaints. As such, most of the letters are addressed to either Disney, Miramax, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, or Michael Eisner.

The following is a sample of the type of 'hate mail' that we've been getting:

Please note that all of these letters were sent months before the film was even announced for release. Most of the letter writers have not yet seen the actual film.

Bob + Harvey Weinstein,

To those whose last name indicates a particular background (ethnically speaking), it seems so false, insincere and downright malicious that you and your herd could make fun and try to kill the human respect due a people.

It's you, the liberal Jews who have not suffered the evils of what took place in Germany during the Second World War but who will do the same thing to Christians especially Catholics for the only dollar - God [illegible] - money.

Why don't you and your kind do a documentary on the immortality of the liberal Jews. Get to know what you as a people are like.

Shame on you - God have mercy on you. Think of us when you try to be a "good" Jew the next time. Origin Unknown

Dear Disney/Miramax,

I am writing about your movie Dogma.

Since I am a devout Catholic I find this kind of movie about the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ having sexual relations with the Apostles totally unfair to the Catholic Church. Not to mention the allegations attacking the Holy Sacrifice of the Catholic Mass.

I am disgusted to read about this and would demand that it not be shown to the public.

It is a disgrace to all Catholics.

Dear Disney + Miramax -

My daughter age 12 saw this on my desk today and said, "Mom, how could Disney do such a horrible thing?" My 8 year old said, "do what?" She read to him the short one page article and he responded, - "Oh Yuck! Why would Disney be so mean or lie so much?"

From one small article you have destroyed your image that children of all ages have grown to love. You didn't destroy their beliefs or faith but you have damaged their trust in you.

May God forgive you.

Dear Bob and Harvey,

It is with great sadness that I have read about the content of your film Dogma.

Such a film is beneath your intelligence and dignity as human beings. I pray that you lose a lot of money on such films, and that you direct your considerable efforts to making films that contribute to making this world more beautiful and worthwhile. Our life on this earth, a tiny planet in the vast reaches of the universe, is very temporary. I pray that God open your minds and hearts, set aside your vanity, pride and greed, so that you will find God in your lives, and praise Him with everything you say, think, and do.

I want everyone to go to 'heaven' the next and much more important life.

Dear Sir,

Your insulting DOGMA movie will infiltrate the country with trash and false information in regard to Our Father in Heaven and His beloved Apostles.

PLEASE reflect and consider the people who look for a wholesone Disney movie.

The idea that this movie had to be made will probably rank right up there with the need for "Free Willy" to have a sequel. It troubles me that somewhere in the ingredients of film making in the 90's someone added SHOCK to the mix at the expense of quality. Any idea of good film making is going down the tubes parallel to our morality, just to ring in the dawning of the Jerry Springer school of entertainment. I am truly sad that this film was made, and perhaps saddened more that there is now a created demand for this assault on our senses.
