: : Just so you know...
: : He wrote that song about a sad, check-out clerk at his local market. Not that is bad thing.
In fact, that tune breaks me up when I hear it. A true, heartbreaking tribute to the working
class (way more insightfull than anything by Bruce Springsteen). Just offering some insight
to the context.

: To do something more insightful, to say nothing of more enjoyable and pleasant to listen
to, than Springsteen. But that's just me.
: You're right about the context, though. It'd break me up more if it weren't STILL his most
overplayed song, radio or video. On VH1 Classic, they always play the unplugged version of
that, accompanied by Oliver's Army which they CONSISTENTLY mislabel as "What's So Funny
('Bout Peace, Love and Understanding)." If you're really lucky, you get one of the two
Veronica videos they show. *sigh*

...but can we keep the Springsteen bashing to a minimum? Come on....he doesn't deserve
that and you know it.....they're both great songwriters....it's not like we're talking about Jon
Bon Jovi or anything...
