To date Open Range has $29.2 million in box office to FvJ's $61.5 million. So all I'm seeing there is that the FvJ audience was able to get to see the movie faster. And that to date FvJ has earned twice the box office, which is more important in the early weeks when the percentage of film rental to box office is higher. So even if Open Range has a flatter dropoff, it'll earn less in film rental going forward.
The the question is one of profitability. Now, the reported budget on Range is $26 million while on FvJ it's reported at $30 million. So for a similar budget FvJ is doing a lot better.
So I guess it's your definition of "tanked." But yeah, now that I've sat down and done the numbers, it looks like even Open Range is gonna make a modest profit.
