Syracuse is only 50 mins away- and it's a kind of big city.
What always amazed me growing up is that for all the really rural little towns (Trumansburg, Lansing, Danby, etc.) Ithaca WAS the big city. We Ithacans thought we were soooooo metropolitan compared to them. Ha ha.

Ithaca is an amazing place. I really think collge towns are always the best places to live. I've lived in Ann Arbor also, and it was very much like Ithaca in terms of the creativity and open-mindedness.

I'd live in Ithaca if my husband had any chance of finding a high paying job in the area.
