It's about 2 hours from anywhere even vaguely of consequence, and the only mass transit into town is the bus - they don't even have a train station. There's a little rinky-dink airport, but I never had anything to do with that. It's 4 1/2 - 5 hours (depending on how insanely you drive) from my area of central NJ.
However, despite it's remoteness, Ithaca is one of the artsiest, most open-minded and interesting areas you're likely to find in this country. It's a truly amazing place. And hey - Ben & Jerry's parlor, so bonus there, right? Plus at least 3 head shops within easy walking distance from each other (and from the Ben & Jerry's, for that matter), unless things have changed in the last 4 years. If they have, then there's probably MORE than 3.
