I was looking at the box office numbers for Jersey Girl and comparing it to a few other films:
Jersey Girl is up to about $25 Million
Scooby Doo 2 is up to about $80 Million
Ladykillers is up to about $38 Million
The Whole Ten Yards is up to about $16 Million
Hellboy is up to about $58 Million
here are the costs including marketing:
$35 + 15 Million
Scooby Doo 2
$84 + More Million
$70 + 25 Million
The Whole Ten Yards
$40 + 20 Million
$66 + 30 Million
All of these movies had good advertising campaigns and so far have all lost money even Punisher is not doing well and wont break even in the box office.
I think the primary reason these movies did not do well is they were mostly released at the wrong time.
Hellboy - Summer Movie
Scooby Doo 2 - Summer Movie
Jersey Girl should have been released either at Thanksgiving or Christmas. The sad fact is that The Passion took most of the money from all of these pictures and by the time it started to fall new movies came in.
To me Jersey Girl is a $100 Million + movie. I really liked it and it touched many hearts. I was saddened that much of the advertising for the movie ended after the first weekend.
I can't wait for the Jersey Girl DVD to come out...and Kevin please let us know how the DVD is selling.
I just hate seeing Kevin getting screwed. Mallrats, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and now Jersey Girl.
How has he gotten screwed?
Mallrats - didn't get to include scenes he wanted/language he wanted, poor advertising.
Dogma - no one wanted to distribute his Opus...Catholic League boycotts and protests...this is still my favorite Kevin Smith Movie.
Jay and Silent Bob - Who can forget the "sneak preview" debacle...still a funnier movie than American Pie 2
and finally Jersey Girl
This is the quintessential holiday movie Thanksgiving to Christmas...it should have come out last year...honest and truly
Poor Advertising after opening weekend - I wouldnt have known about it if I missed the ads after the first weekend.
So yes I rant and rave...but its all about love man...
