Most other sitcoms had some sort of set premise that limited the stories. Friends had a premise that never restricted where they could go.
Yeah they played out certain shit, and babies being born is overdone, and coupling isn't that exciting, but damn, it's a 22 episode season, and at least 19 of those are gonna be very amusing, at least. I can put up with some crap for a lot of good stuff.
Plus they get major props for never trying to be more serious than they could get away with. Melodrama worked because they poked fun at it later. They never sat down to talk about drugs, or date rape, or Matthew Perry's pill addiction.
I'm not really saying to give it a chance, cause I can see how other people can find it stupid, but don't talk such shit about it if you've only seen 4 or 5 out of 200 something episodes.
