And as a random story for you:
My aunt once treated his wife when she was a nurse. Joel came to pick her up (and this was after a faily severe beating where she said she "fell down the stair" and didn't press any charges) and she said he was dismissive and sarcastic to the doctors when they were explaining the extent of her injuries, saying they couldn't be that bad- and was telling Hedda to hurry up and get her stuff together.
Now, my aunt is not overly descriptive or emotional, but she said his eyes were completely dead, lacking any sort of concern/emotion for Hedda.
