: Yes, the beginnings of emo came from that... but it was Weezer-ripoff acts who popularized it. If not, it would've remained a subset of a subset of punk and not something defined unto itself and marketable.

: How do I know this? Though I don't care for most punk, since Utica was such a small town, I knew every punk band in Upstate New York because the coffeehouse I hung out at was the only viable punk venue between Syracuse and Albany.
