Yes, the beginnings of emo came from that... but it was Weezer-ripoff acts who popularized it. If not, it would've remained a subset of a subset of punk and not something defined unto itself and marketable.

How do I know this? Though I don't care for most punk, since Utica was such a small town, I knew every punk band in Upstate New York because the coffeehouse I hung out at was the only viable punk venue between Syracuse and Albany.

Also the only viable poetry venue, folk rock venue, comedy rock venue, rockabilly venue, etc.

If you were remotely fringe in Utica, it was VBLPs or nothing.

And then, it closed.
