I'm afraid I can't agree with you. There are movies that portray teens as totally normal and healthy, and everything in between. I think the truth of the matter is that most adults have no clue about what teens are involved in, so it's nice as a wake-up.
I mean... even in "Kids" it wasn't a case of 'all' teens being portrayed that way.
I'm not sure locale is the thing either, at least in terms of drugs. Some studies say that drug use is higher in rural communities (not that 200,000 is rural) than in cities. And of course, alcohol is a drug heavily used in rural communities.
Your P.S. confuses me, I never said anything about doing things against one's own free will. Unless you think peer pressure falls into that category. I have compassion for anyone who has fallen victim to drugs.

Hey, it sounds like this movie just doesn't apply to you, and that's great. Although if your parents see it, you might be in for a little grief :). Keep it in mind though, that there *are* kids like this, and it could happen to your best friend. And then, of course, don't assume that your own children (if and when you have them) won't have these problems. I would hate to hear a parent say, "I have no compassion for him/her, she/he did it to him/herself."

: I can see your point too, but as a teenager myself I grow tired of seeing teens portrayed as out of control. I can see why parents would be interested in this movie, as well as teen girls, but it just doesn't look like my kind of thing.
:
: I've never done drugs or anything like that, and I can honestly say I don't know many people who do (but that may be because of the crowd I hang out with), so I am always uncomfortable to see all teens as drug craving lunatics in movies.

: But I think the big thing for me is my locale. I live in a city of about 200,000 in Canada, so I am sure it is much different in New York, so maybe it is just a problem of me not being able to relate to the habitat these kids are in.

: P.S. When I said I have no compassion for people who do things to themselves I meant if someone does drugs under their own free will and destroys their lives they shouldn't look to me for sympathy.
