Anyone know about hacking DVD players?

The reason I ask is because I bought a new one last month mainly for the reason it said it could play VCD's.

I just found out it doesn't (false advertising), but I found out it can be hacked.

My question is, if I can hack it, will that mean I can play VCD's or just that it can play all region DVD's?
