... so even if you don't realise it, or even if you deny it, you subconciously rank Hockey and American Football higher.

American football gets little or no respect. Put quite honestly, it is a form of rugby with several rules amended to make it easier, with pads and helmets to boot. It is also too slow. It's not regarded as a real man's game. I have played both in High School (albeit rugby was not through the school) and saw American Football as vastly inferior. Then again, in my Hibernio-centric mind, I subconciously rank football and rugby higher than American football.

Football is a very skill-demanding and strategy-filled game. Just like there are plays in American Football that the team huddles together, organizes and plays, the ten playing men on a Football team have a certain formation of defenders, midfielders and strikers. The captain and manager of the team have to organize the best plan of attack. While a quarterback gets to call the shots in the huddle every few minutes, the capatain and manager only have the beginning of the game and half-time to work it out - hence making it a more challenging and exciting game.

Ice Hockey IS very demanding, yes. I'll agree there.

I suggest you read up on the rules and strategy of football, or "soccer" as you call it. Once you understand it, it's an incredibly rewarding game, and fun to play too.
