: I know they made a TV programme out of it, but I didn't know about any film. And it still confuses me as to how anyone who's not British can enjoy those books... I suppose it's like Kevin's films - they're pretty heavy on the American referencing, but the humour shines through so everyone can enjoy 'em. Ho-hum, such is life.

Some of it is very Brit-specific, but it's still hysterical. One of my favorite passages in any of the books is where Arthur shuts down the Heart of Gold trying to get the machine to make a cup of tea.

Arthur is very British, but there's a lot of good commentary on American society as well -- and Zaphod is a very relatable character for Americans, and the Hitchhiker's Guide itself is quite American. Americans are the cheap travellers, after all, and all the decadent space-partying on other worlds is very much our style. Pour me a shot of that Ol' Janx Spirit.
