I'd like to think he tried.

But I could also see him being distracted, not getting to it until it was too late. Dante wasn't in a good place to be with anyone until he had himself figured out. Situational celibacy could have helped him make up his mind.

I don't have any problem Banky being gay. I saw Chasing Amy about a month ago for the first time since seeing JSBSB, and I thought it fit together very well.

The role that really jumps out from that film now is HooperX. So much of what he says takes on new meaning knowing that he and Banky get together. It makes you wonder - was he hot for Banky all along? And when he was telling Holden, "that boy is conflicted," -- wasn't it really Hooper who was having some emotional turmoil?
I think if you watch it for the relationship between he and Banky, it looks like he's hitting on him throughout the whole film.

Only one problem with that, though - as I understand it, neither Hooper or Banky ever thought to tell Kevin they were gay.
Oh well.
Is it possible to write a character so well rounded and emotionally believable that the character surpass even what the writer knows about him? Creating movies is a collaborative process between the writer, actor, director. Just thinking.
