I am one of those "younger generation" that you were talking about. I think it is hard for us to comprehend what is going on, the other biggest event in my life was when JFK Jr. died. We are not prepared to deal with something this enormous. we do not know how to react to this event, and i think one of the reasons for that is that the movies, television shows, music, plays etc, in general our culture and media have not been able to portray the emotions that everyone in America is probably feeling right now.
The reason that we arent able to "grasp the magnamity of what is going on" is because we have nothing in our lives to compare this to. Nothing huge enough. The only thing nearly large enough is Pearl Harbour, which we werent alive for, and the only way we have seen these things are through television and movies and books.
Please understand that i am not angry with you, i am simply trying to give you a feel for where we (my generation) stands right now. Also, my greatest prayers and sympathies are with you as you try to contact your family in Manhatten. I wish you all the best.
