Now, as to the pattern you mentioned, I don't know that there was one. Clerks and Chasing Amy were, however, more "serious" flicks than Mallrats. Clerks much less so than Amy, but the fact remains that of those 3, Mallrats is without a doubt the silliest. I think there's a happy ending because it was more of a "feel-good" movie overall than the others. Dogma has a happy ending as well, by the way - Bethany is brought back to life and impregnated. I thought that was pretty happy.
