I think it was sort of half based on his life in high school, (maybe have a dark attitude toward others and/or (if I'm correct at all) being a loner type (not meaning that as an insult Vin, I just remember you saying something similar to that...). Also the whole James Bulgar case in England where the two 11 (?) year olds kidnapped, tortured and killed (not nessercerely in that order) a 2 year old.
There's bits of truth there I believe...
