The role of Maximus did not require an action man, but an actor who is athletic!!! Russell, yes I'm on first name terms, is exactly that!

Of course he frowns for the whole movie, he's at war, then his family get slaughtered!! Not a happy scenario!!!! No reason to be happy!!!

He smiles (ish) as he is dying 'cos he knew he would be seeing his family again!!!! Could you imagine Stallone or Van Damme trying to pull off that scene??? No, thought not!!!!
