I believe Jay denied the mall thing and lingo because he was around the very mature Holden McNeil.

We all act differently depending on our company.
Although we are fundamentally the same person, our emotions alter.
Remember, others lives reflect on your own.

Jay could be a clown to Dante & Randal, after all they were in the same boat as him, doing nothing with their lives except having fun.
Jay also played the clown in Mallrats, being around Brodie who was doing the same thing, just having fun, not advancing forward.

Holden however was making something of his life, advancing forward, and was probably the most mature person Jay knows, thus he acted that little more mature by downplaying his past.

But still, Jay was Jay, still giving Bob shit and cracking jokes ... it also explains why Jay wasn't too interested in the comic, being above such trivial little funny books, and knowing Holden has accomplished something where he hasn't. But ultimately, he was the same ol' Jay, try as he might to be that lil' more mature.

I may be wrong, it has been known to happen.
But I believe Jay just was being a Chameleon.
Like we all have been at one point or another.
