In literal legal terms, having the copyright (c) symbol implies copyright, although neither that, nor mailing it to yourself, are the best (re: most legally valid) ways to copyright your work. Spend the $30 (give or take) and register with the US Copyright Office - they have all the info and downloadable forms you'll need at their website. I don't have the site URL around, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding it.
