For what the movie was made to do (make money and realistically portray the sinking), it did what it set out to do. It accomplished both big time. Think of how long it will be before we see another original Titanic movie. This capped the depictions CBS and Broadway had within the last three years. However the weak spots were very weak. Of all the Cameron movies, this one gave us the weakest story. Abyss and Aliens were deeper in character, and True Lies actually had a pro-marriage ending.

But at least when DiCaprio sank, he didn't give a thumbs-up sign like the Terminator in T2's ending. That may have been Cameron's corniest moment yet.

The meatiest movie was GWH. The script has to weigh more than Titanic's. And except for the scene where Cassey Affleck masturbates in the friend's mother's bedroom, there wasn't a wasted scene. Why was that in there anyway?

I'm glad Titanic won. If not, we'd be flooded with "why not" reports on the networks and the TV tabloids for many a moon.
