: Ok so Titanic has surpassed star wars...blah blah
: But what about inflation

Let's not forget that films like GONE WITH THE WIND, STAR WARS, et al were also released during a time when movies had a much higher attendance than they do today, due to lack of video, cable, etc., and often these films built up their high grosses and ticket sales over the course of MANY re-releases. What TITANIC has done is, in this light, all the more extraordinary- it has truly recreated a 'must-see' event in the theater, to the point where people are seeing it over and over again. Whereas so many people nowadays opt to 'wait for the video', TITANIC has drawn them back into the theater to see a movie the way it is meant to be seen.

Even adjusted for inflation, TITANIC will end up in the top ten of all time, and given what I mentioned above that's a HUGE fucking accomplishment, especially since it did so during its initial release.
