OK, it broke all the records.
It tied for Oscar wins.
Now the fashionable backlash begins. "Oh, I was really rooting for LA Confidential/Full Monty/GWH the whole time, Titanic didn't deserve this."
That is as may be, but just remember...
Way back in late December, there were an awful lot of you (myself included) who were on the boards and on IRC gushing about this great movie we had just seen.
I remember having one of those nights where you come home from the theater and you want to call up everyone you know and tell them to go see this movie. You want to go out and see this thing again THAT NIGHT because you are still on an emotional high. You are uncaring that it is well past midnight - people have to KNOW about this thing. That's a great film. It moves you. Titanic moved a lot of people in a way they were not expecting.
Sure, if you look back you realize that maybe some bits and pieces were imperfect, but Titanic was far more than the sum of its parts. Just keep that in mind before you get swept into the inevitable critical backlash.
You were lucky enough to be part of a pop-culture milestone. Revel in it, celebrate it, and do not be a fairweather friend.
