": Yes, in reality she should have told the truth, no question. But for the story's sake to better illustrate Holden's insecurities, he had to be shoved into the mix by Cohee's story instead of gradually by a knawing understanding that she was previously (keyword here: previously) a slut."
I guess I AM trying to impose real world logic on a cinematic piece, but Smith's other films have a certain hyper-reality to them that I think this aspect of CHASING AMY lost.
"Holden wouldn't have been as bothered had she told the truth. The whole thing would have been averted. But then again he might not have fallen so hard for her either, because I mean who falls in love with the town whore?"
I don't know man, that seems like a morality judgement to me. You like fucking right? Well, so do chicks (I went to Catholic school, when I found this out I was shocked as a motherfucker). So Alyssa's a chick who likes fucking A LOT, doesn't make her a whore, makes her horny.
I'm horny.
I wouldn't call myself a whore.
Though sometimes I like to call myself Daddy.
": The lie is important because in many ways Holden is the victim."
Agreed. I think this whole theory is kind of based on the fact I felt (and feel) sorry for Holden's character and thought the point that the film made ignored the importance of truth...
I think the message was muted as a result of this.
