what i meant was the main continuity. there are several batman series that take place within the DC universe (batman, batman: gotham knights, batman:legends of the dark knight, detective comics, etc.). something like the dark knight returns is an elseworlds tale, one that occurs outside of the main dc universe. it's DC's version of Marvel's What If? series.
