IMHO no one has surpassed that movie yet in terms of *innovation*. The idea that the STAR WARS trilogy jumpstarted modern American cinema, action movies/blockbusters/etc. is just bullllshit, man. Lucas copped everything from the last seven minutes of 2001.
I'll put it in old-SAT form for you:
Kubrick is to Hendrix as Lucas is to Jimmy Page.
