My husband and I went to see a Saturday 2:45 showing of Jersey Girl in Portland, Oregon. We got there early to get good seats and to watch people as they came in. The audience was definitely skewed female, but there were men of all ages there too, usually with women. We saw everything from groups of pre-teens and teenagers to 20 and 30-something couples, and yes, even members of "the greatest generation." This theater had stadium-style seating, and by the time the lights went out it was about 80-85% full.
There were lots of laughs throughout. As someone else mentioned, I was surprised how much laughter I heard during the shower scene, as it has been played so much on TV. Other big laughs included the Matt Damon/Jason Lee scene (God, I hope that mustache on Jason wasn't real), Maya's questions to Ollie in the diner, and the "I'll show you mine" scene (particularly, Ollie's line, "Sadly, yes."). Of course, the tears were there too. I'm currently five months pregnant, so I knew to bring a caseload of Kleenex to the show and ended up using most of it. This is certainly a compiment to Kevin's beautiful writing and directing, as well as Affleck's most gripping performance (Good Will Hunting still comes in a close second.).
Afterward, people seemed to be in that "lost in the movie" daze and some stuck around to watch the credits, which I took as a good sign. I even heard some laughter in response to the Thank You's and the new logo. I'm crossing my fingers that these people will tell everyone they know to go see it and the numbers will be just as high next weekend.
A most enjoyable flick, Kevin! Congrats!
Amy
P.S. Some Jersey Girl clippings from Portland, Oregon are already headed your way.
