Daddy Wayne was fabulously-well-to-do on old family money... and was a surgeon not so much to make money but more to... do good with it. To help people, to give back after his wealth allowed him a superb education and all that.
Which is a good parallel to Bruce and Bats. A cutting-edge surgeon who heals people is... sort of the normal-person equiv of being the Batman, in a way.
