: Simply a combination of the sun image with the crucifix so as to ease the switch to christianity?
: I could be wrong, but I thought that's what it was.

To the best of my understanding.. When St. Patrick introduced Christianity to the Celts he didn't want to go in and say "You're wrong, I'm right.." and totally stamp out their beliefs.. So he took the sun which had profound meaning for the Celts and the crucifix which obviously had profound meaning for the Christians and fused them.. If I'm off, please feel free to correct me, but I'm pretty sure that's it..
