The book is a history of the "genre" of independent film. Sure films were made independently prior to the late 80's, but the movement known as "indie" didn't really get its moniker until the late 80's, starting, or thereabouts, with "sex, lies, and videotapes". Since then, films have been considered "indie" by a changing scale of definitions, but the idea that an "indie" movie was made "independently" of a major studio is no longer a given.
