She's that one hot girl that you knew in high school who was also somewhat attainable (at least in your mind) because she also turned out to be... pretty much batshit crazy. The popular guys weren't going to date her because they were afraid of her and the popular girls wouldn't hang out with her because they were really pissed off because she shattered their teenage notion that to be hot you had to be conventional and... in high school logic, to the popular girls, normal and popular and hot are supposed to be synonimous.

Good-looking but attainable for other reasons is the hallmark of hot to dorky guys.

And Jolie... covered in tattoos, wanting to adopt a child of every ethnicity as a single mother (gotta catch 'em all!) and in general appearing to be the kind of woman who likes to go skeet shooting drunk in high heels... fits that bill.

The exact opposite of the Jolie effect is the Courtney Love effect, a girl who isn't attractive or interesting and yet... since she hangs out with the cool kids and follows all the trends... some weak-minded gentlemen assume that she's hot just because she's popular.

These guys have been neutered by their television sets, allowing the teevee to tell them what's hot instead of their genitals and shall be hung from the neck until dead, if only as a point of mercy.

Case in point: Sarah Jessica Parker is supposedly a gorgeous actress according to the television... even though she looks like ET in a designer dress. But since she had a hit teevee show, some people just assume that makes her hot.

Jolie looks a lot better as a light brunette, though, definitely.
