I've got a friend who was born and raised in Nicaragua, and he came here to go to school. Turns out his family is of Sicilian descent and fled the fascist regime under Mussolini (sp?) in the thirties to lovely Nicaragua. Sicilians in Latin America you say? Perhaps they got involved in illegal activities? All I know is when I visited his "estate" the armed guards walk patterns around their land and escort him throughout the city with freaking AK-47's. No joke. Relics of the Afghani resistance against the Soviets. Apparently about 30% of the land of Nicaragua is in private ownership by his family. So look for the fabulously wealthy "coffee" plantations.
