: If you were to recommend a course on comic
: books, which comic books, series, issues, writers, artists and/or trends would you
: recommend a person look at? Who and what changed comics? Who are your
: major influences? Who is breaking ground today? (Mainstream or independent
: stuff would be great.)

A lot of this advice depends on what era of comics you want to know about. If you want to go way back, the work of Will Eisner is a must read. In later era's the writing and/or art of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Jim Steranko, Neal Adams, John Romita Sr, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Peter David, Alex Ross and Warren Ellis. The guys of today to be checked out, Brian Michael Bendis, Grant Morrison, Jeph Loeb, Mark Millar, Garth Ennis, Bryan Hitch, David Finch, David Mack, John Cassady, and like a few dozen more.

Storylines I'd suggest: The Kindly Ones from Sandman, Dark Phoenix from X-Men, Watchmen, Batman: Dark Knight, Kingdom Come, Marvels, Frank Miller's Daredevil run, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, Grant Morrison's Animal Man run.

Trends:
The anti-hero of the 80's - Wolvernine, Punisher, Spawn.
The big guns, big tits, art over story of the 90's - Image Comics, anything by Rob Liefeld.

I'll stop boring you now :) If you need more, please ask.

: Although I am writing to Kevin Smith, I would also appreciate any one else's
: recommmendations.

Comics are my passion, thanks for giving me a reason to write about them :)
