Our process of marriage (handfasting) can be done between any two people, whether they are romantic partners or friends, lovers or family -- any two people who wish to be bound together spiritually.

I was not aware of this belief and being open minded to all beliefs, I have to say that I have no problems with a spiritual bond between 2 people... Love is Love whether it is traditional or gay. If your religion allows the joining of same sex partners I am no one to disagree or challenge it. However, I do not agree with the need for the government to acknowledge that as a sanctioned marriage.

: So -- if a Constitutional law is passed preventing gay people from marrying, then MY religion is being denied. I'm an American citizen and my religion is my right. How do we reconcile this view with that of the ultra-conservative Christian who declares that government-sanctioned gay marriage is an abomination that cannot be tolerated?

No one has denied your religion. You can still have your spiritual ceremony to join you. But I as a non-ultra conservative Christian - and technically at least according to politicalcompass.org I am an authoritarian Leftist or a Communist - Do not have to allow your religious belief to tell the government that we have to recognize your union as a government sanctioned marriage.
