DJ Ed Sciaky Dies at 55
Sciaky was known recognizing and promoting new talent. He is credited with being the first DJ to play Bruce Springsteen, among other artists.
I am saddened by the news of Ed's death. Ed was in two of my classes at Temple University in 1966. He used to make me laugh so much that it was difficult keeping focused on the class. He was always cracking jokes. He was funny and witty. I recall that Ed was a math and science major who was destined to work in the Space program. So you can imagine my surprise when I was scanning channels on the radio back in 1968 and heard a voice that I would recognize anywhere. It was Ed! I couldn't believe that I was hearing him on a commercial radio station. At Temple, Ed was a D.J. for WRTI. He did a show called, "The Bright Lights Of Broadway" where he played entire show albums. Because I love show music, I listened to his show every week. My mother wanted to hear, "My Fair Lady" so I asked Ed if he would play it. Five minutes later, the tower went down. The next day, Ed said he was glad because he really didn't like, "My Fair Lady" and the only reason he played it was that I requested it. He was that kind of guy -- always wanting to give the audience what they wanted. Little did I know that his little "hobby" would turn into more than 35 years as a Philadelphia celebrity. He will be sadly missed.
