...but somehow, I understood why people followed him.
Firstly, it was the late 1960's. "Free-Love" and all that nonesense. Second, you gotta remember: these were largely girls who were ostracized by society and/or their parents and felt unloved. What I find so fascinating is that he purposely subverted the hippie culture to his own ends and coerced these people into doing what they did.
Of course he's nuts. But I do find what he did really fascinating.
