I mean, the fact that he's in a movie with Ian McKellen, Bernard Hill, and Viggo Mortensen, and *he* is the one who the press is talking about getting an Oscar for it, that should tell you that he has the best reps of anybody in the cast.
He's also the only person associated with 'Lord of the Rings' whom I've ever seen publicly bad-mouth Peter Jackson, so I think he's probably as much of a dick as he seems like on the DVDs. (Especially the one for 'Goonies' where everybody makes fun of him so much that he leaves mid-commentary track.)
