"Variants" listed in your dictionary are not correct -- they are variants. That means people use them -- they are not preferred by educated editors.

That's not true, variants just mean that one is the initial established "this is right" and later, variations came up that weren't significantly different to warrant a different entry.

Just for instance, there is no more a difference between "judgment" and "judgement" then there is between "toward" and "towards". Both are equally right in any situation (though people can prefer one or the other for 'toward', or one or the other might sound more right).

(No, that's not sour grapes, as I knew that he'd be citing "judgment" as preferred.)
