I spent a few years struggling to come up with rent on how little they pay, too. On the upside, though, most of the metroplex papers are pretty impressed with the Shorthorn and you've got a good shot at getting a better paying job later.
Too late for this season, but if you really like writing about football, the DMN and the Startle-Gram hire freelancers to cover the high school football games. Back in my day, a lot of my friends picked up some extra cash doing that. Dycus can probably tell you more about it, if you're interested.

: I barely go there, I'm never on campus. This semester I'm writing sports for the paper, so I'm supposed to be there more. So, I got your job now Cam! But, we don't have a football team, B-Ball season is almost over, and I don't really enjoy the other sports... Plus, I barely get paid, and I have lots of expenses.
