Not necessarily, but they generally are people who express themselves best in the written word.

That's a good question, but I don't have a good answer. I mean, why do people make preconceptions about people based upon meeting them one time and judging their appearance? Some people feel the need to categorize others.

No and no.

They're Internet-friends, which not the same as a regular friend but is certainly more than words on a screen. You might know everything about their lives but if you met them it would still be like meeting them for the first time. It's a weird mix of total intimacy and complete stranger-ness.
