Although I don't think too much of Viggo Mortensen's acting abilities (he's good, no doubts there, but I don't think he's Oscar-worthy), Townsend would have ruined the entire trilogy with his presence. He is an absolutely horrid actor who plays up the "angst-ridden, enigmatic pretty boy" role, and that's just not what Aragorn was. I am forever thankful that he was replaced, else the "LOTR" trilogy could have gone from one of the greatest trilogies of all time to, well, "The Matrix" trilogy.
