Xtian and diff are both right.

1. the program you're watching has to support closed-captioning, which most do.

2. your TV has to support it as well, which most do. I think around the early to mid-'90s, most TVs began including this in their menu options. I own a Sony TV that has a simple set-up ... i simply push the 'display' button twice and it pops up. this will even work with DVDs that don't have subtitle options (however, most do).
