To be serious, I've been to that place. She said she loved me, I said it to her, but a complicated situation ultimately caused her to retract that statement and deal a blow the likes of which I doubt will every be surpassed. To be forced to settle for 'maybe it would have worked in another life' is not an easy swallow. It might have made a good script if I could write.
It does get better, but it will always mean something. Occasionally you will think about where you would be right now if things were different - what if you did things differently, what if I didn't compromise. If it was truly that serious, it will be with you forever and in a strange way it's the only comfort, for me anyway.
