I hate to say it, but it's the one true test. If any friendship/couple truly cares about one another, other people's perception should not be an issue.
When you ask or beg for the public spotlight, there are both pluses and minuses to be aware of.
In a way I might pity them, but they're both intelligent enough to know better. Certain actions or quotes should not have been so willingly offered up to the public.
If you want things to be private, don't announce: "I am keeping things private now". Instead, just keep quiet and stay out of the limelight.
