There was no need to put "Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home." at the end of the episode. It cut off any chance of doing anything else with the story, because Sam would no longer have any reason to hope. He was starting to feel like God's butt-monkey as it was. Yeah, what he did was heroic - I'm not denying that. I'm just saying that it didn't have to end there.
