PhD's also have a tendency of lining up with the political affiliations of the college or other institution they profess at. And most colleges tend to drift on the liberal side. Not to mention the general liberal lean of educators, since Dems tend to be a little more supportive of educational funding (an issue I agree with them on). So there's a bias there too.
BTW, I tend to run moderate, varying significantly by issue, and tend to side with Republicans but mostly just because I feel there's an imbalance in the Dems' favor.
