I think it works multiple ways. I remember Kevin Smith mentioning that he connected to all the characters. Holden was his on-screen representation of dealing with Joey's past. Banky was the annoyed friend who hated his best friend disappearing for sex constantly. Hooper was his views on the gay community, and Alyssa was his conscience. I think all of these characters are relatable in some way. Hell, even Silent Bob's story kinda relates to experiences of mine (in the context of stupid decisions at least).
