As for Mr. Mayhew's contract stipulations, that was put there just in case. For example, in the contracts of most if not all actors in the X-Men movies, they're required to be in sequels if the studio decides to make any. Same with Spider-Man I think. Chewie's contract was a just-in-case thing. Doesn't mean anything really.

There were talks over 20 yrs. back about a 3rd trilogy that wouldn't start filming until almost a decade from now. I remember Mark Hamil on the Tonight Show after Return of the Jedi came out mentioning that. I think it was wishful thinking on his part.

I wouldn't mind if they made Star Wars films that took place after, during, before the original trilogy but only as stand-alone films that don't really feature the main characters we all know.
